Model text

Schools Should Teach Students How Algorithms Influence What They See Digital literacy is often taught as the ability to search for information, recognise unreliable websites, and protect personal data. These skills matter, but schools should also teach students how recommendation algorithms shape the information placed in front of them. The first reason is that personalised feeds can create a false impression of what is normal or widely believed. If a student repeatedly watches one type of political, health, or lifestyle content, a platform may show more of the same because engagement is easier to predict. Understanding this process helps students separate popularity in their own feed from popularity in society. Secondly, algorithm awareness encourages more active information habits. Students who know why a platform is recommending something are more likely to search deliberately for alternative explanations rather than treating the next suggested video as neutral. Some people argue that algorithms are too technical for ordinary school lessons and change too quickly to teach accurately. Schools do not need to explain the mathematics behind every system. The lasting principle is simpler: platforms select and rank content according to particular goals. For that reason, algorithm awareness should be treated as a basic part of modern media education. Students need not become programmers, but they should understand that a personal feed is a designed environment.
