B1 Intermediate News & media Communication

1. Print & online news

  • print media = newspapers and magazines printed on paper. Many people read less print media than before.
  • magazine = a thin book with articles and photos, often about one topic. He buys a science magazine every month.
  • newspaper / paper = a daily or weekly publication with news and adverts. I read the newspaper on the train.
  • tabloid = a popular newspaper with small pages and lots of pictures; often less serious. She doesn’t trust everything in the tabloids.

2. Stories & headlines

  • front page = the first page of a newspaper. The election result was on the front page.
  • headline = the big title at the top of a news story. People often only read the headline.
  • make headlines = become very important news. The story made headlines around the world.
  • article = a piece of writing on one topic in a newspaper or magazine. I found an interesting article about climate change.
  • blog post = an informal article published on a blog. She writes a new blog post every Friday.

3. TV, radio & broadcasts

  • broadcast (v) = send a programme on TV or radio; (n) = a TV/radio show that people can watch or listen to. The match will be broadcast live tonight. I heard the news in the morning broadcast.
  • TV channel = a television station and all its programmes. That channel shows a lot of documentaries.
  • radio station = a company that produces radio programmes. I listen to the same radio station every day.
  • programme / program = a show on TV or radio. We watched a travel programme last night.

4. Advertising

  • advertisement / ad = a message that promotes a product, job, or event (in print, online, etc.). I saw an ad for a new job in the paper.
  • commercial = an advertisement on TV or radio. There were too many commercials during the film.

5. Journalists & the audience

  • the press = newspapers, magazines and the people who work for them. After the accident, the press arrived very quickly.
  • journalist = a person who finds, writes, and reports news. That journalist writes a weekly column.
  • listener = someone who listens to radio programmes. The show has millions of regular listeners.
  • viewer = someone who watches TV. The series attracts a lot of young viewers.
  • audience = all the people watching or listening to a programme or event. The presenter thanked the audience for watching.
  • paparazzi = photographers who follow famous people to take photos of them. The paparazzi waited outside the hotel.
  • cameraman = a person who films TV programmes or reports. The cameraman asked them to walk more slowly.

6. Presenters & reporters

  • presenter = the person who presents a TV or radio programme. She is the main presenter on the evening news.
  • host = a presenter who welcomes and talks to guests. The host introduced the singer to the audience.
  • reporter = a journalist who reports news, often from outside the studio. The reporter was speaking live from the city centre.
  • sports reporter = a reporter who covers sports news. As a sports reporter, he travels to many matches.
  • weather reporter = a reporter who presents the weather forecast. The weather reporter said it will rain tomorrow.
