Hi, I’m Ethan. Last spring, my friend Leo and I planned a weekend trip to a small town by the sea. We wanted something simple: two train tickets, one cheap guesthouse, and two days of walking, eating seafood, and taking photos. I had planned almost every detail, so I felt completely prepared. The first problem appeared before we even left the city. Our train was cancelled because of a technical issue. The next train was not for three hours, and the station was crowded with annoyed passengers. Leo suggested going home and trying another weekend, but I did not want to waste the reservation. So we waited. When we finally arrived, it was already dark and raining heavily. I opened the map on my phone, but the battery was almost dead. We walked in the wrong direction for twenty minutes before realising the sea was behind us, not in front of us. By the time we found the guesthouse, our shoes were wet and we were both silent. Then came the worst surprise. The owner looked at my booking and said it was for the following weekend. I had chosen the wrong date. For a moment, I could not speak. I had been so proud of my careful planning, and now we had nowhere to stay. The owner could not give us a room, but she was kinder than I expected. She called her cousin, who owned a small café with two rooms upstairs. The café was not near the beach, and the room was very basic, but it was warm and dry. That felt like luxury after the rain. The next morning, our plan was already ruined, so we stopped trying to follow it. We had breakfast in the café, talked to the owner’s cousin, and asked him what he would do with one free day in town. He sent us to a quiet fishing harbour, a hill with a beautiful view, and a tiny restaurant that was not on any travel website. That day became one of my favourite travel memories. Not because everything went well, but because it didn’t. When the plan disappeared, we started paying attention to the place itself. Since then, I still plan trips, but I leave more space for surprises.
