Talk about things that were true or happened repeatedly in the past but are not true now.
used to + base verb = past habit/state (no longer true)
didn’t use to / Did … use to?
would + base verb = past habit (not states)
be/get used to + noun/V-ing = be/become accustomed (present/past/future)
✅Meaning
PAST HABITS
- I used to practice English for ten minutes every evening.
- We used to write new words in a notebook after class.
PAST STATES
- He used to be nervous when he spoke English.
- I used to hate listening exercises, but now I enjoy them.
Pronunciation
- used to is pronounced /ˈjuːst tə/ (“yoost tə”).

NEGATIVE
- I didn’t use to speak English at work. also: never used to
QUESTION
- Did you use to watch cartoons in English? — Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.

Spelling: In negatives/questions use use, not used (because did carries the past): didn’t use to, Did you use to…?

used to vs past simple
- Habit: I used to read short English stories before bed. (= regularly in the past)
- Single event / mentioned time: I read a story yesterday. (NOT *used to)
Present habits → use usually/often + present simple: I usually review new words in the morning.
used to do vs would do
- Both for past habits: After dinner, we would listen to English songs together.
- would ❌ for past states: I would be shy → use I used to be shy.
🧷be/get used to (accustomed to)
- be used to + noun/V-ing: I’m used to speaking English in lessons now.
- get used to + noun/V-ing: She’s getting used to understanding fast speech.
Key difference: used to + do (past habit/state). be/get used to + V-ing/noun (be or become accustomed at any time).
🚫Common mistakes
- ❌ I use to study every day. → ✅ I used to study every day.
- ❌ Did you used to…? → ✅ Did you use to…?
- ❌ Present habit with used to: I used to practice now. → ✅ I usually practice now.
