Hi, I’m Sophie. Today I want to talk about something I really like in big cities: community gardens. A community garden is a small green space where people grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers together. It can be in a quiet corner of a park, behind apartment buildings, or even on a rooftop. At first, I thought it was only for people who already knew a lot about plants. But then I joined one near my home, and I learned that beginners are welcome too. In our garden, everyone has a small job. Some people water the plants, others pull weeds, and someone checks if the soil is dry. We grow tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, basil, and sometimes strawberries. It’s not a perfect system—sometimes we forget to water, and sometimes insects eat the leaves. But we help each other, and the garden still grows. For me, the best part is not only the food. It’s the feeling of community. I meet neighbors I never talked to before. We share seeds, we share advice, and sometimes we share simple recipes. It also changes the way I think about shopping. When you grow even a little food, you understand how much work is behind it. Another thing I like is how it helps the city feel calmer. After a stressful day, I can spend thirty minutes in the garden, and my mind slows down. I don’t look at my phone so much, and I feel more present. In the future, I think community gardens will become even more important. Cities are getting bigger, and people want more nature, cleaner air, and healthier habits. A small garden won’t solve every problem, but it can make everyday life better—one green corner at a time.
