PresentPresent Simple
Signal wordsalways, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day/week, once/twice a week
  • Habits & routines: I wash my hair every day. · He usually gets up early.
  • Facts & permanent states: Water boils at 100°C. · She is very tall.
  • Future in time clauses: I’ll call you when I arrive. (present after when/if, not will)
PresentPresent Continuous
Signal wordsnow, right now, at the moment, these days/this week
  • Actions in progress: I can’t talk; I’m brushing my teeth.
  • Temporary actions: My car is in the garage, so I’m taking the bus this week.
  • Arrangements: We’re meeting Sally at 7 tomorrow.
Note: Don’t use it with stative verbs (know, like, need, seem, believe, have* meaning possession).
PresentPresent Perfect
Signal wordsrecently, lately, ever, never, before, just, already, yet, today/this week, for, since, how long
  • Recent events (no time given): She’s just called. · Have you finished yet?
  • Life experience: Have you ever been to Ireland? · I’ve read that book twice.
  • Unfinished time: We’ve known each other since school. · I’ve lived here for 5 years.

  • Finished actions: We moved to Chester two years ago.
  • Story sequence: I opened the door, walked in and saw him.
  • Past habits/states: We often played in the park. · He lived with his grandparents.
PastPast Continuous

  • Action in progress at a time: At 10 p.m. I was sleeping like a baby.
  • Background in stories: It was getting dark and I was walking to the pub when…
  • Interrupted action: We were cooking dinner when she arrived.
FutureWill + base verb
  • Predictions (opinion): I think he’ll win.
  • Instant decisions: “No sugar.” — “I’ll buy some.”
  • Promises/Offers/Suggestions (shall): I will always love you. · Shall I help you?
FutureBe going to
  • Plans/intentions: I’m going to look for a job this summer.
  • Predictions from evidence: Look out! We’re going to have an accident.
FuturePresent Continuous (arrangements)
  • Fixed plans with a time: I’m seeing the dentist at 6. · We’re leaving tomorrow morning.
Cheat sheetWhich tense should I use?
  • Routine or fact? ➜ Present Simple.
  • Happening now / temporary? ➜ Present Continuous.
  • No time given, result now / life experience / since–for? ➜ Present Perfect.
  • Finished in the past (time known)? ➜ Past Simple.
  • In progress at a past time / background? ➜ Past Continuous.
  • Decision now / promise / offer? ➜ Will.
  • Plan already decided / clear evidence? ➜ Be going to.
  • Diary arrangement with time? ➜ Present Continuous (future).

Reminder: In time clauses with when / if / as soon as / before / after / until, use the present for the future idea: “I’ll call you when I arrive.”
