Use these prepositions after verbs of movement (go, come, walk, run, drive, fly, cycle, etc.) to describe direction and route.

TO / FROM
- We walked to the station. · They drove from Boston to NYC.
INTO / OUT OF
- She ran into the shop. (movement inside)
- He got out of the taxi. (leaving an enclosed space)
Use into to emphasise entry; use to for direction without entering.
🛞Onto / Off · Get in/on
ONTO / OFF
- The cat jumped onto the table; later it jumped off.
TRANSPORT
- Get on / off a bus, train, plane, bike: “We got on the bus.”
- Get in / out of a car/taxi/van: “She got out of the car.”

ALONG
- We walked quietly along the beach. (= following a line/path)
ACROSS
- She swam across the river. (= from one side to the other on a surface/area)
THROUGH
- They drove through the tunnel / through the forest. (= inside a space or among things)

OVER / UNDER
- He jumped over the fence. · We went under the bridge.
UP / DOWN
- They ran up the hill and down the stairs.
🔁Around · Past
AROUND
- We walked around the lake. (= encircling / avoiding the centre)
PAST
- The police drove past our building. (= beyond, without stopping)
➡️Towards / Away from
DIRECTION
- She walked towards me. (= in my direction, not necessarily arriving)
- He moved away from the fire. (= increasing distance)
🚗How we travel
BY / ON FOOT
- I go to work by car. · We went to Zurich by plane. · I go to school on foot.
VERB OR “TAKE”
- I drive to work. · She flew to Zurich. · We took a taxi/bus/train to the airport.
🧪Quick contrasts
- We walked to the door vs walked into the room.
- He ran across the road vs ran through the crowd.
- They flew over the mountains vs drove through the mountains.
🚫Common mistakes
- ✗ We got in the bus. → ✅ We got on the bus.
- ✗ He went to inside the shop. → ✅ He went into the shop.
- ✗ They walked through the street (open space). → ✅ They walked along the street / across the street.
Tip: After nouns we often show routes with from … to …: “the road from Leeds to York.”
