Was and were are the past simple forms of the verb to be.

  • was ➝ used with I, he, she, it
  • were ➝ used with you, we, they

✅ Positive:

  • I was at home yesterday.
  • She was excited about the party.
  • We were tired after the excursion.
  • You were late to the meeting.

🚫 Negative:

  • He was not (wasn’t) at school.
  • They were not (weren’t) ready.
  • Paul was tired, but Susan wasn’t.
  • We weren’t happy with the results.

❓ Questions:

  • Was she at the conference?
  • Were you late yesterday?
  • Where were you born?

💬 Short Answers:

  • Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
  • Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t.

📌 Use

Use was/were to talk about the past. These are the past forms of am/is/are:

  • I am happy → I was happy
  • She is at work → She was at work
  • They are busy → They were busy

🕒 Time expressions used with was/were:

yesterday, last night, last week, a year ago, in 2010, when I was a child…

📌 Examples:

  • She was in Stuttgart last summer.

👶 Be Born

We always use was/were born to talk about someone's birth. There is no present tense of “be born.”

  • 📍 Where were you born? – I was born in Sweden.
  • 🎵 Mozart was born in 1756.

⚠️ Incorrect: I am born in Sweden.
